Monster May(hem) continues, and this one’s for Dave! For my second submission, may I present: the Spiny Death Worm!
This miniature is one I’ve had for a couple of years now…one, in fact that I wanted to get painted for last year’s Monster May(hem); but alas, I didn’t get to it in time. The Spiny Death Worm is available through Wargames Terrain Workshop; a.k.a. our buddy Dave’s joint!
There’s a nicely painted picture of this miniature on Dave’s site; but of course I wanted to put my own spin on it, so I didn’t copy the color scheme. You’ll have to tell me if I did ok. I considered basing this Spiny Death Worm on a snowy base, but instead went for a dry desert base.
Here is the blogroll of other participants in Monster May(hem), and their projects that I’m aware of so far. Drop by their sites and show your support!
- Simon, from Fantorical
- Dave, from Wargames Terrain Workshop, has sculpted the majority of his own miniatures for his submissions: a Dragonkin warrior, a Clawed Fiend and a Jerba (a Star Wars beast of burden) thus far. He’s also done some GW Dark Elf Khymera, and they look terrifying, and a Slaan Lord on Palanquin (which definitely counts as a monster, Dave!) Did I mention he sculpted the Spiny Death Worm, too?
- Matt, from PM Painting did the creepy Jötunn Moder from The Ritual, and a Fungal Troll that may be one of my favorite things I’ve ever seen by Matt, and that’s saying a lot; considering how talented he is. The colors on this are inspired. Everyone should check this one out!
- Jeremy, from Carrion Crow’s Buffet
- Roger, from Rantings from Under the Wargames Table
- Azazel, from Azazel’s Bitz Box
- Jon, from Jon’s Hobby Desk
- Snapfit, from Da Green Horde
- Mark A. Morin, from the eponymous markamorin.com.
- Tom, @The_Goodground has painted a creepy demon miniature, a storm elemental, a Rat Ogre, an objective marker so monstrous it counts as a monster, a vulture demon and a Gnoph-Keh! You can see them over on his Instagram!
- Malcolm, @mdcampbell_dunwichcreatives has painted thee monsters so far, a Runequest Walktapus, a classic Grenadier Shadowrun miniature, the Feathered Serpent and a Reaper Carrion Crawler! So far, he’s posted the Walktapus and the Feathered Serpent on his Instagram account! You can see all of them in my #miniatures channel on the Discord server, if you have access. If you don’t, ask!
- Mike, @sasquatchminis is working on a White Dragon. He has also posted some WIP shots to the Discord server.
Wonderful rendition Keith, the colour choices you’ve gone for give it a real alien feel, not to say you don’t get snakes in those colours in the real world ! LOL Thank you for the inclusion of the Slann, wasn’t sure it would count ! LOL Working on some more monstrous creatures now.
I love this guy, Dave. Looking forward to your next project!
Excellent stuff, Keith. Reminds me of what the Mara from “Doctor Who” might have looked like had the BBC had the budget back in the Eighties.
Thanks, Simon. I have no idea what you’re talking about. 🙂 Sadly, growing up here in the US, I missed shows like Dr. Who and Blake’s Seven and Red Dwarf. I do remember the Tom Baker Dr. Who was on PBS when I was in grade school, but I never really watched it. Recently, though, I’ve watched some clips of the Autons. Creepy stuff, even now!
LOL!!! Then you’ve definitely missed some top sci-fi in your youth. The Mara was a giant snake-demon which Peter Davison’s Fifth Doctor encountered twice. Scared me to death when it possessed people but was a major disappointment when it finally made its appearance as a Papier-mâché model. LOL!!!
The Grognard Files podcast recently did an episode about Dr. Who and they mentioned papier-mache quite a lot. Another show I missed was UFO. No idea what it was about but the outfits were interesting.
Excellent painting on a great mini, Keith! I love the blues and the way you got the spots looking so good. And those teeth! Talk about terrifying!
Thanks for the kind words about my troll, I really appreciate them 🙂
The teeth are all Dave’s work, Matt; but I’ll take the compliment on the paint. I keep returning to your page to admire that troll. It’s really exceptional work.
Smashing bit of work on the worm mate UFO, Dr who, and Blakes seven! Add in Space 1999 and you have the basic tale of me growing up!
Yes I’m not dead, and I do have a monster on the go, but this month has been a disaster hobby wise. Sorry. I will try and post by the end of the month though.
Cheers Roger.
I was wondering if you got arrested or something, Roger. No worries…I know full well what real life can do to hobby time. Hope you can make it this year, but even if not, next month is Forgotten Heroes!
Actually I’ve just posted on Jes’ site that I’m going to give FH a miss this year, just don’t have the time to commit to it at the moment. Cheers Roger
Well, that’s a bummer, Roger. You’ll be missed!
