In a hole in the ground there lived a piper…

It’s not exactly a hobbit-hole, but it’s comfy enough. That’s where I’ve been spending my time lately. Every time I come out I can’t seem to get back down there fast enough.

Obviously I haven’t been here at the Tavern in a while. I’m just not motivated. Not for hobby stuff; I’ve been doing plenty of that. In fact it’s about the only thing that’s keeping me sane. I’m just not motivated to write about anything lately. I think the state of the world and of my country in particular is finally getting to me.

My country, in case anyone doesn’t know, is Bizarro World. Everything is fucking upside-down and backwards, and has been for four years and counting. But don’t worry. I’m pretty sure it’ll be over in a month if not sooner, when my country completely fucking explodes. I’ve never been happier about not having any children.

Dead Dick’s Tavern is generally a politics-free zone. No one comes here for my opinions on why science is a good thing; why putting children in cages is a bad thing; why deploying secret police on peaceful protesters is a bad thing; why endorsing overtly racist supremacist groups are a bad thing, why health care for everyone is a good thing; why shooting unarmed people in their own homes is a bad thing; and why arguing about wearing a mask when over 200,000 people and counting in my country alone are dead from a virulent, airborne plague is the supreme height of fucking stupidity.

That debate…what a fucking fiasco. Jesus.

So, I will stay in my basement, I guess. It has my miniatures, my video games, my gaming table. (I’ve had a solo game set up and ready to go for a month, but thus far haven’t felt the urge.) Unlike an actual hobbit-hole, it doesn’t have a bedroom, a kitchen or a bathroom. So I will have to ascend from time to time.

As I said, I am still painting miniatures. I post them on my Instagram page, because not every one is worthy of a blog post. Check it out if you like; there’s a link in the sidebar.

I’ll probably play that game at some point. Then I will post an After Action Report. I’m also planning on running a game of Slasher Flick before Halloween. Perhaps I’ll write about that, too.

In the meantime, stay safe and healthy, everyone.

Great to hear you are safe and well Keith, I think the world as a whole is going to hell in a handcart, and we all have strange alien beings running our countries, as if they were human you’d think they would have a conscience. I think of the film “They Live” as more of a documentary than a work of fiction !
Will check out your Instagram to see what you’ve been up to, and very much look forward to reading your future posts

Thanks, Dave. I have been absent from my own blog, but I have managed to drop by yours and others, from time to time. I really love Ben’s house. Now…are you gonna game with it or just admire it? 🙂

Thank’s Keith, currently admiring it, as it’s sat near my painting area (not close enought to get splashes on it !) but definitely want to game with it, just thinking of a suitable scenario

Perhaps some Sand People need a reminder of why it’s unwise to bother the crazy old man…or what if the Empire found where Obi-Wan was hiding and sent someone to get him?

Halloween fast approaches, young Piper! A time to post on your blog about ghosties and ghoulies and long-legged beasties! Or the crew of the Enterprise facing a haunted house… Or Sergeant Fury and his Howling Commandoes facing Baron Blood in the Eastern Europe. We need some quality content on the Internet, rather than the doom, gloom and negativity everywhere else. Missed your unique voice and humour, Keith, so let’s have some fun.

Good to “see” you back, Jez. I noticed I wasn’t the only guy who disappeared for a while…As far as games go, I have a pulp scenario set up (Sorry, Dave, no Trek yet). All I need is the motivation to play it. Funny you should mention Baron Blood; back when I converted/painted the Liberty Legion for Forgotten Heroes, I made sure to pick up a Baron Blood Heroclix. I thought he would be useful should I ever game Weird WWII with the Legion or the Invaders! So it could happen!

I too am very much in a slump at present, and am trying to think of a way to get out of it, (I have one and might be posting it up on the blog soon, ). The world has very much turned to poop at the moment with our leaders (you sadly don’t have the monopoly on this) are a bunch of assholes I wouldn’t let run a tap let alone a country.

I feel we are in the position of a group of chickens that our owners have left with “Colonel Saunders” to look after while they go on holiday, I really don’t blame you for wanting to shut your self away however though I cant say it’s going to get better, we do have to make the best of it, if that means paint little soldiers and sharing them with a community spread around the globe, so be it, you are not aloneand there are still some sane people out there (not often we get called that now is it!).

Hope you (and me) start posting again soon, I miss us

    Cheers Roger.

It’s just so fucked up, Roger. Knowing the shit will absolutely hit the fan in a month is stressful enough; but not as stressful as the prospect of another four years like this. In other news, I keep reminding myself to check out IRO’s podcast, as I just can’t wait to hear the dulcet sounds of your voice…

          1. Dick Garrison

Luke ((IRO) is a very cool chap, despite his penchant for that “Games Workshop” nonsense listening to his podcasts was one of the things that helped me through the lockdown to be honest, it was only a small thing but I think you need something to look forward to and hold onto to keep you sane at these times.

His blogs good too though a lot darker than my usual stuff.

            Cheers Roger.

Good to see you posting, mate. I share your many concerns about the state of this country (I’m not even a citizen yet, but there are times when I seem to value the Constitution more than the REAL ‘MERCAN PATRIOTS who I see on Facebook) and I’m dreading the election and its aftermath. Luckily I’ve been kept busy looking at houses here in VT and generally taking in the gorgeous scenery and meeting lots of friendly people.

Looking forward to when you start posting your AARs again, I love reading them. Stay safe (and sane)!

Thanks, Matt. I’m hoping to get back in the saddle soon. I don’t know if you are aware, but our good friend Roger plugged both our humble sites in a recent Imperial Rebel Ork podcast. That rascal…
